Precision Teaching

What is Precision Teaching?

Precision Teaching (PT) is a monitoring, practice, and decision-making technology for improving performance of any kind. It is a behavioural strategy developed by Ogden Lindsley and applied most often to Special Educational Needs. PT is a 1-1 method of structured teaching and assessment that allows frequent changes to be made to tuition, based on the child’s progress. The assessment is timed, and data is taken, to measure frequency of correct versus incorrect responses. This data enables progress to be analysed and teaching procedures and/or targets to be adapted accordingly. It is beneficial for improving the fluency of skills and providing a systemic structure for teaching.

Who is Precision Teaching for?

Precision Teaching can be used with any learner of any age, but may be most appropriate for school aged children and young people. This is useful for children who are struggling to learn from traditional group teaching methods and need a more structured approach to 1-1 teaching. It is most beneficial for skills that require fluency to support more complex learning, such as phonics, sight words, spellings, number bonds, mental maths, etc. It may be recommended by a SENCO, Educational Psychologist or Behavioural Consultant.

How is Precision Teaching carried out?

Our Behaviour Consultants, who specialise in education support, can offer one off training or training and ongoing supervision to your school teams. They can work with large teams or deliver training individualised to a certain pupil and his/her support staff. This will usually include theory training, practical demonstration, support in choosing targets, support in adapting teaching procedures and analysis of data.

NB: we offer bespoke quotes for schools to meet the varying needs of their pupils or an individual pupil’s EHCP.

Please do not hesitate to get to discuss the needs of your school/pupils.
